Empowerment

Empowerment is a process by which people, organisations or groups who are powerless become aware of the power dynamics at work in their life context, develop the skills and capacity for gaining control over their lives, exercise their control without infringing on the rights of others and support the empowerment of others in the community. Empowerment always comes from within a person or an organisation and is the result of awareness building. Empowerment is a process that can be facilitated, but not given or transferred by external stakeholders.
