Words and language are a form of power. For centuries persons with disabilities have been described using terminology rooted in charitable and medical approaches.
The rise in the 20th century of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) movements, especially after the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), has served to challenge this language.
