Requirements of international frameworks

Participation is a human right that applies to everyone, including persons with disabilities. Duty bearers have the responsibility to respect, protect and promote participation, which is detailed in many global frameworks.

Disability-inclusive approaches to participation lead to better inclusion of all marginalised groups. And approaches that are sensitive to the needs of other groups for full and effective participation have great potential to benefit persons with disabilities as well. This chapter introduces human rights and political frameworks and their approach to participation, including how they relate to the participation of persons with disabilities.
